Salvia madrensis - 1 litre pot
Not often available is this glorious and unusual species, with magnificent spikes of long-lasting soft-yellow flowers emerging from brighter buds. The whole plant creates a talking point every year, with its big softly-hairy leaves and incredibly stout looking square stems, often marked with deep burgundy. The flower stems are its crowning glory and it is one I look forward to seeing every year. Dormant from late winter into spring, it will eventually reappear from underground and slowly grow to its full height which can be anywhere from 1.5-2.5m depending on soil and climate. Give it space, a little sun, a little shade in the hot afternoons, a mulch to protect it in winter and it will reward you! It also looks amazing with contrasting companions like Salvia iodantha in hot magenta, or S. confertiflora with its glowing red candlestick-like flower stems. 1 litre pot.
