Phlomis russeliana, 1 litre pot
This is probably the most well-known Phlomis, often called Jerusalem sage or Turkish sage. If you want a plant that has great foliage, flowers and seedheads, plus is easy to grow then this one definitely fits the criteria. A wonderful species which thrives in the summer heat, forming clumps of highly attractive large heart-shaped grey-green leaves which are softly hairy to touch. Strong, upright stems bear many whorls of soft lemon-yellow flowers opening from darker buds. Once the flowers fall the seed heads come into their own, providing strong upright structure and interest for the garden right into winter. Flowering size when mature around 80-100cm tall x 70-90cm wide. Plants can be divided every few years and a few seedlings will pop up around the main plant if the seedheads are left on as well. Needs good drainage in winter and full sun but otherwise is easy to please. 1 litre pot.
