Penstemon ovatus - 9cm pot
I've been experimenting more and more with 'forest edge' type species of Penstemon and this one falls into that category, so it will be interesting to see how it performs this summer, especially in our more humid environs. "Broad-leaved Penstemon' as it is commonly known, thrives in more of a woodland environment, with low clumps of broadly-oblong glossy green leaves and in summer, tall stems carrying many whorled panicles of smaller flowers, in stunning blue softening into shades of soft violet-pink with a pale throat. Best planted morning sun or dappled shade in average soil. If you think your soil will get too dry over the summer then mulch with a little leafy compost. When mature these plants will make clumps 30-40cm across with flower stems rising 60-90cm. 9cm pot. (Photo courtesy of Jelitto, thank you)
