I received a piece of this plant from a friend as Centaurea ossaea, and I see it is being sold within NZ as this species, however C. ossaea should have fine, fern-like foliage and different bracts. So after much searching (with a very helpful plant nerd friend) we have identified this as C. thirkei, native to Southeastern European countries such as Greece and Turkey.
A fantastic low-growing ground cover species that forms mats of grey-green foliage. Short stems bear large white flowers with very dark violet stamens. Happy in full sun or part light shade. It spreads out into a clump by sending short runners underground - not invasive but just so you know, it will pop itself next to other nearby plants! Height to 20-30cm. 1 litre pot.
