(Red sage; Dan Shen). This is a graceful plant that has low clumps of soft, divided foliage which emerge from the winter dormant taproot. Whorled spikes of gorgeous lavender-blue flowers, quite large and with a hooded upper lip appear throughout the summer on arching stems - repeats well if given a water every now and then. Prefers a position with part shade for half the day and protection from hot sun in summer, but my experience shows it copes with almost any conditions really. In warmer climates it tends to stay semi-evergreen and sometimes flowers out of season too. I get frequent requests for this beauty as it has both attractive foliage and flowers over a long period. Height with flowers 40-60cm x 40-50cm wide. 9cm pot.
