A striking plant from Venezuela that needs a partly sunny position with excellent drainage and a weekly watering during hot summers. Erect to rounded shrub with large, softly hairy heart-shaped grey-green leaves. From mid-summer to frost, 2-foot long, darkest purple flowering stems bear tubular deep-red flowers with contrasting dark calyces in widely-spaced whorls. Little pruning required, just trim off spent flower stems occasionally. Only hardy to light frost. Mature size 1m high x 60-80cm wide. 1 litre pot.
