Mertensia maritima Oysterleaf - 9cm pot
Hard to find, these have popped up from their winter dormancy and are beginning to grow strongly so need planting out. They prefer average or cool conditions so don't be tempted to put them in a greenhouse or similar. A striking plant grown mostly for its foliage, which is a stunning silvery blue-green colour, and tastes like oysters! Yes you read that right...it literally tastes like a delicious oyster. Terminal clusters of pretty forget-me-not blue flowers, which are also edible. At home in either the vegetable or flower garden, but prefers a well-drained site in a half day of sun. Trailing habit when flowering, otherwise clumping, ideal for growing in tubs, pots or gardens where they won't get swamped by other plants. Protect from slugs and snails and caterpillars occasionally. 15-20cm H x 40cm W. 9cm pot.
