A magnificent plant in the right position, forming a bushy, upright shrub with glossy dark green leaves and an endless succession of gorgeous bright scarlet flowers from early summer until winter. New foliage is frequently tinged with gold. In the wild it grows on the warm, shady mountainsides in parts of South America. Here in NZ it is best grown in a sheltered spot under trees, with plenty of leafy mulch (not bark chip) to keep it going in hot dry summers. Will grow happily in full sun with a cool root run, but the leaves will not be as dark and glossy (see 3rd photo). Frost tender. Mature height 1m x 1m. 1 litre pot.
