One of the stand-out plants in my summer garden, this shorter and more reliably perennial form has always drawn lots of comment as it does not resemble a ‘normal’ catmint. Forms a mound of thick, soft, furry grey foliage on slightly sprawling stems, then in midsummer many upright spikes of tightly packed mauve flowers with dark purple bracts appear. A perennial from the Mediterranean, this Nepeta produces a tuber similar to a Dahlia in order to survive drought. Dormant in winter, and also in times of prolonged drought, mine generally retreats underground in late summer when it gets very hot and dry. Full sun. Flowering at 30-50cm high x 40-50cm wide at maturity. 9cm pot.
