Vernonia arkansana - 9cm pot
(syn. V. crinita). Strong upright stems of narrow, slightly crinkled green leaves are quite unassuming on this low maintenance perennial. Stunning in a natural style planting, the stems are topped in late summer with branched sprays of many-petalled bright violet-magenta-purple flowers followed by gorgeous seedheads. A really useful plant that doesn't seem to be affected by any weather issues and is incredibly tough and drought-hardy once established. It doesn't clump-up rapidly either, so no danger of it getting out of hand. Completely winter-dormant, sprouting again in spring. Flowering height 150-200cm depending on soil and maturity of the plant. 9cm pot.
