Salvia canariensis hybrid - 9cm pot
Earlier in the year I was lucky enough to collect seeds from my friend Stephanie's Salvia canariensis, including a cross she had between the original species and the variation known as candidissima. The plant was intermediate between the two forms, with hairier foliage than the species, but not as densely silver as the other form. The flowers appeared to be a darker mauve as well. So now I have a batch of plants of this hybrid ready to go - they are looking as they should, neither green nor silver but in between. No doubt some variation will happen but they will all be beautiful. Here's the description from the species form to give you a general idea of what to expect...
A fast-growing and very striking rounded shrub with arrow-shaped leaves, grey-green with a light covering of fine white hairs. From mid-summer through to autumn it covers itself in mauve flowers set off further by the pinky-purple calyces which remain long after the flowers have faded. Prefers a sunny warm spot with good drainage and shelter from harsh frosts, but will grow very well in a spot with only morning sun as well. Cut back after flowering to new growth and it will come away again. Flowering size 1.5-1.8m tall x 1.2m wide. 9cm pot.
